Frequently Asked Questions

Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people who are 65 or older, certain people under 65 with disabilities, people with end-stage renal disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant, sometimes called ESRD).

A Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan (also known as a Medigap policy) is an insurance policy that helps supplement Original Medicare and is sold by private companies. A Medigap policy can help pay some of the remaining health care costs that Original Medicare doesn’t pay for covered services and supplies, like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. Original Medicare pays for much, but not all, of the cost for covered health care services and supplies. These are “gaps” in Medicare coverage.

Mountain Health CO-OP offers Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans A, F, G, and N in Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming.  These plans vary in what they cover, so it is important to consider your current health needs and weigh them against plans available before choosing and purchasing one.

A supplemental policy helps you manage and budget your health care expenses while giving you the freedom to choose your providers (who must accept Medicare) and a plan that best meets your needs. These policies help give you peace of mind.

When you turn 65 and are covered by Medicare Part B, you become eligible for Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans.

The best time to buy a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy is during your 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period. This period automatically starts the month you turn 65 and are enrolled in Medicare Part B.  You can also consider changing your Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan when the Medicare Open Enrollment period begins, which is usually in October.
